Magento 2.4.6 end of life: what it means for your webshop.
Since 11 August 2026, Magento Open Source 2.4.6 no longer gets security patches. Your shop keeps running, but new vulnerabilities stay open. If your webshop runs on 2.4.6 or older, now is the time to decide what's next. I'll help you with that.
What changed on 11 August 2026
Nothing broke overnight. But Adobe, the company behind Magento, stopped releasing patches for Magento Open Source 2.4.6. Its security bulletins since then list 2.4.6 as affected, and only offer the Open Source fix for 2.4.7 and newer.
- Every vulnerability found from now on stays open in your shop.
- Hackers actively look for outdated webshops. In 2024, a single Magento vulnerability (CosmicSting) was used to hack more than 4,300 webshops, about 5% of all Magento stores, at its peak 3 to 5 per hour.
- A webshop handles customer data and payments: exactly what hackers are after.
- 2.4.6 runs on PHP 8.1 or 8.2. PHP 8.1 stopped getting security fixes at the end of 2025, and PHP 8.2 stops on 31 December 2026. Hosting providers will start phasing out PHP 8.2.
- Extensions and payment modules drop support for old versions, so even small changes get harder.

Open Source or Adobe Commerce?
Magento comes in two editions, and the dates differ.
- Magento Open Source is the free edition, and the one most webshops use. For 2.4.6, support ended on 11 August 2026. There is no extension.
- Adobe Commerce is the paid edition. If you pay Adobe a licence fee, you have this one. Adobe gives 2.4.6 extended support until 31 August 2027, then security fixes only until 31 May 2028.
Not sure which version your shop runs? Log in to the Magento admin: the version number is at the bottom of the page. Or ask your developer or hosting provider.

Your options
Upgrade Magento. Moving to 2.4.8 or 2.4.9 gives you security patches again, until 2028 or 2029. A Magento upgrade is a project of its own, and the same question comes back: every release line gets three years of regular support.
Move your webshop. To a platform that someone keeps up to date for you, so end-of-life dates are no longer your problem. Your products, customers, orders and Google rankings come along. How a webshop migration goes.
Which one is right depends on your shop. Half an hour on the phone is usually enough to find out, and I'll tell you honestly what I'd do.
What to do now
Check your version
In the Magento admin, or ask your developer or hosting provider.
Check your hosting
Find out which PHP version your shop runs on, and when your hosting provider drops it.
Choose: upgrade or move
Look further than the next date. How often do you want to face this again?
Start before the busy season
Plan the work for a quiet period, not in the weeks before the holidays.
Is your webshop on Magento 2.4.6 or older?
Let's talk. Half an hour is usually enough to know what your best next step is.
I take on a few migrations at a time, so every shop gets my full attention.
