Shopware 5 end of life: what it means for your webshop.
Shopware stopped releasing updates for Shopware 5 at the end of July 2024. Your shop keeps running, but it is getting older every month. If your webshop still runs on Shopware 5, it's time to decide what's next. I'll help you with that.
What end of life means for your shop
Nothing broke overnight. But since August 2024, Shopware no longer fixes Shopware 5. Every month the shop gets a little further behind.
- Vulnerabilities found from now on are no longer fixed by Shopware itself.
- Vulnerabilities become public, and hackers then search automatically for webshops that still have them. During one Magento vulnerability in 2024, 3 to 5 webshops per hour were hacked at its peak.
- A webshop handles customer data and payments: exactly what hackers are after.
- Shopware 5 runs on PHP 8.2 at most, and PHP 8.2 stops getting security fixes on 31 December 2026. Hosting providers will start phasing out PHP 8.2.
- Plugin makers and payment providers stop updating their Shopware 5 versions, so even small changes get harder.

Your options
Paid extended support. An independent company, safefive, offers security patches for the Shopware 5 core. It is not part of Shopware, and it does not cover your plugins. It buys time, but the shop doesn't get any newer.
Shopware 6. Despite the name, this is not an update but a new system. Your design and plugins have to be built again. Shopware 6 releases a new major version every year, so keeping up is ongoing work.
Move your webshop. To a platform that someone keeps up to date for you, so end-of-life dates are no longer your problem. Your products, customers, orders and Google rankings come along. How a webshop migration goes.
Which one is right depends on your shop. Half an hour on the phone is usually enough to find out, and I'll tell you honestly what I'd do.

Check your hosting
Find out which PHP version your shop runs on, and when your hosting provider drops it.
List your plugins
Which ones does your shop really need, and are they still maintained?
Choose: extend, rebuild or move
Look further than the next date. How often do you want to face this again?
Start before the busy season
Plan the work for a quiet period, not in the weeks before the holidays.
